Is Dental Work in Turkey Safe?
Our Honest Answer (2026)
The British Dental Association's 2024 survey found that 86% of UK patients who had dental treatment abroad reported complications. That number is real, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. This page is what we wish every patient read before they book — at any clinic, including ours.
The honest reality
Dental tourism in Turkey is not a single category. It is hundreds of clinics — some excellent, some adequate, and some frankly unsafe — operating under wildly different standards, all using the same Instagram ads. From the UK side it is almost impossible to tell them apart before you fly.
Most of the well-publicised disasters share three patterns: a clinic chosen on price alone, irreversible procedures (zirconia crowns on healthy teeth, mostly) carried out within 24 hours of landing, and zero structured follow-up once the patient is back in the UK. When something starts to go wrong six months later, the WhatsApp number stops replying.
The hard truth: the problem is not the country, the surgeons, or the materials. Turkey trains world-class dentists and the major implant brands cost the same here as they do in London. The problem is that the UK patient has no easy way to separate a clinic that cuts corners from one that does not.
This page is our attempt to make that separation easy — by writing down, in plain language, the seven things we do that the cheapest clinics do not.
What we do differently — seven protocols
None of these are heroic. They are the boring fundamentals every clinic should already be running. Most don't.
EU-equivalent sterilisation
Class B autoclave at 134 °C, individually pouched instruments, weekly biological spore testing, written logs, and a visual instrument check before every procedure. You can ask to see the logs.
Verified dentist credentials
All three resident dentists are TDB-registered. Dt. Serdar Demirtürk is also a TOD-member orthodontist. Diploma copies are sent on request before you travel.
Material brand transparency
We use Straumann, Nobel Biocare and Implance implants — your specific brand, batch and lot number are written into the contract before treatment starts. No bait-and-switch.
Informed consent (UK GMC standard)
Before any irreversible work, you sign a written consent document that explains the procedure, the alternatives, the risks, the recovery and the realistic outcome. We use the same standard the GMC publishes for UK consultants.
Written warranty
10 years on implants, 5 years on zirconia crowns. The conditions, exclusions and what triggers a free re-treatment are written in plain English on the certificate you receive on the day.
Structured follow-up calls
Day 3, week 1, month 1, month 3. The same coordinator who booked your treatment phones you on each date. We log every call and any concern is escalated to the treating dentist within the same business day.
UK aftercare partner network
Free 12-month access to our partner dentists in Manchester, London and Birmingham for in-person checks, plus unlimited 30-minute video consultations with your treating dentist for a full year.
Sterilisation, in detail
Sterilisation is the single most common shortcut in cut-price clinics, and the one most likely to bite a patient six months later. Our protocol is unremarkable by EU standards, which is exactly the point.
- Class B autoclave (Euronda E10) running a full 134 °C cycle with vacuum pre-cycles — the same standard used by UK NHS practices.
- Every instrument is individually pouched, dated, and signed off by the technician who packed it.
- Biological spore tests run weekly. Logs are kept for five years and can be shown on request.
- Instrument-by-instrument visual inspection on the surgical tray before any procedure begins. The patient sees the unwrapping.
- Single-use items (needles, scalpels, irrigation tips, high-volume aspirator tips) are exactly that — opened in front of you, disposed of in a sealed yellow-bag clinical waste bin.
Dentist credentials
Every irreversible procedure at Ultradiş is performed by a dentist whose qualifications you can independently verify. We will email diploma copies and registration numbers to you before you book — you don't have to ask twice.
- Dt. Serdar Demirtürk — Specialist Orthodontist. Member: Turkish Dental Association (TDB), Turkish Orthodontic Society (TOD).
- Dt. Ayşenur Güneş — Dentist. Member: Turkish Dental Association (TDB).
- Dt. Emine İpşir — Dentist. Member: Turkish Dental Association (TDB).
Material brand transparency
The single most common bait-and-switch in dental tourism is a contract that mentions a "premium implant" with no specific brand, then a generic implant placed on the day. This is how a £400 quote turns into a complication that costs the patient £4,000 to repair in the UK.
At Ultradiş, the implant brand, the specific reference and the lot number are written into the treatment contract before you sit in the chair. We use:
- Straumann (Switzerland) — premium tier, 10-year warranty.
- Nobel Biocare (Sweden) — premium tier, 10-year warranty.
- Implance (Turkey, AEEDC-certified) — mid-tier, 10-year warranty, used when the clinical situation does not require the premium brands.
Whichever brand goes in, you walk out with the implant passport, the batch number, and a reference any UK dentist can look up.
Patient consent — written, not verbal
Before any irreversible procedure begins, you sign a written consent document that follows the format the UK General Medical Council publishes for elective treatment. It covers:
- What the procedure actually involves, in plain English.
- The realistic outcome — including the bits we cannot guarantee.
- Specific risks (infection, nerve involvement, implant failure rates, gum recession risk on crowns).
- Reasonable alternatives, including the option of doing nothing.
- Recovery time, dietary restrictions, and the timeline for follow-up.
You get the document in English 48 hours before treatment so you can read it, sleep on it, and walk in with questions. If you change your mind, the deposit is refunded.
The warranty, in writing
The treatment plan you sign includes a warranty certificate — printed, in English, with conditions stated in plain language:
- Implants: 10 years. Free replacement if the implant fails clinically (loss of osseointegration) outside of patient-side causes such as smoking 10+ /day or untreated peri-implantitis.
- Zirconia crowns: 5 years. Free replacement for fracture, debonding, or aesthetic failure on the cervical margin within the warranty period.
- All-on-4 / All-on-6: 10 years on the implants, 5 years on the prosthesis.
What the warranty does not cover (so it is not a surprise later): cosmetic preference changes, accidental trauma, untreated bruxism without a night-guard, and complications from skipping the follow-up calls.
Follow-up calls — four scheduled, more if needed
The point of follow-up calls is to catch a problem at week one instead of month six. Our coordinator calls you on four scheduled dates after you fly home:
- Day 3 — wound healing, pain levels, antibiotic compliance.
- Week 1 — soft-tissue check by photo, suture status, dietary tolerance.
- Month 1 — bite check, any sensitivity, photo review by the treating dentist.
- Month 3 — long-term comfort, cleaning routine, any aesthetic concern.
Every call is logged. If you flag anything outside normal healing, the case goes to your treating dentist within the same business day and we book a video consultation that week.
UK aftercare partner network
If a follow-up call surfaces something that needs to be looked at in person, you don't have to fly back. We work with independent UK dental practices in Manchester, London and Birmingham as our aftercare referral network — for the first 12 months after treatment, the in-person check is on us.
The full network and how the referral works is on the UK aftercare network page.
What if something does go wrong?
Things go wrong even at good clinics. The honest measure of a clinic is what happens next. Here is our protocol:
- UK-hours emergency line — a dedicated phone number staffed in UK working hours, answered by our patient coordinator, escalated to the treating dentist within 60 minutes.
- Same-day video consult — for anything urgent, your treating dentist will video-call the same business day.
- Free UK partner referral — we send you to one of our partner practices for an in-person check at no cost during the first 12 months.
- Re-treatment in Istanbul — if the warranty applies, the clinical re-work is free. Flights and accommodation for the re-treatment trip are covered up to £600 / €700.

Three anonymised, paraphrased extracts from public dental-tourism forums. Posted here because the warning signs are worth repeating.
"Three crowns failed within 18 months. Clinic stopped replying. No paperwork, no batch numbers, nothing."

"I went with the cheapest option I could find. The hotel was beautiful, the work was rushed, and I'm now £4,000 deep with a UK dentist trying to fix it."
— r/turkeyteeth (paraphrased)
"Picked a clinic that sent me their dentist's diploma and material brands by email before I booked. Two years on, no complications. The boring clinic was the safe one."
